Discussion: The current economy has everyone asking questions about the future. How long will this downturn last? How will it affect my career as an IT Assurance professional? What can I do to help ensure continued career stability and growth? If necessary, how do I find a new position in a slow market? Historically, the IT Assurance professions have provided most practitioners with a high degree of career mobility and stability. In recent years IT Assurance has received more visibility than ever before, largely due to SOX. The heightened attention of Audit Committees, Boards of Directors, and Executive Management gave IT Assurance professionals an unparalleled opportunity to demonstrate value, and created numerous career opportunities. It was hard to imagine that the SOX “boom” would be followed by the biggest economic slump most of us have endured in our professional careers. So where does that leave us now? Despite all the “doom and gloom,” keep in mind that we’re in a resilient profession that has always outperformed the general employment market in terms of stability, mobility, and salary. Of course it is true that many employers are cutting back, and those that aren’t expect to accomplish more with the same or fewer resources. To survive and thrive, you must expand the menu of services you provide. The bottom line is that you must be proactive about managing your career, and adapt to higher expectations. It’s time to step it up a notch. Game on. This session will provide participants with insight into actions IT Assurance professionals can take (and avoid) to ensure continued visibility and impact, and will include a discussion of the skills necessary to navigate your career successfully through a tough economy. Speaker Profile: Derek Duval is the President of Duval Search Associates, a search firm specializing in career guidance and placement for IT Assurance (IT Audit, Compliance, and Risk Management) professionals. He has nearly 15 years of recruiting experience and has presented at dozens of ISACA conferences and seminars on career trends and issues, providing relevant insight about how to position yourself for success amidst the dynamic changes in the world of IT Assurance.
